Some startup milestones are measured in feet, not funding. Bhubaneswar-based BonV Aero has completed fleet testing of its logistics drones across remote, high-altitude locations, demonstrating payload transport at elevations ranging from 10,500 to 16,500 feet, the company announced on 28 October 2026.

Heavy lift, thin air

The trials involved carrying a 32-kg payload and evaluated the performance of heavy-payload unmanned aerial vehicles in challenging operating conditions. BonV Aero is sharing its findings with the Ministry of Defence and other relevant stakeholders, and has not disclosed the specific trial locations, in keeping with operational security practices.

"Operating a fleet of logistics drones at 16,500 feet is a significant milestone, not just for BonV Aero, but for the future of high-altitude logistics in India," said Abinash Sahoo, co-founder and CTO of BonV Aero, crediting years of engineering work in some of the toughest operating environments and the goal of supporting soldiers at forward posts.

A track record at altitude

The latest trials build on earlier achievements, including lifting 30 kg to 19,024 feet at Umling La in Ladakh in 2023. BonV Aero has also supplied 45 heavy-payload UAVs to the Indian Army's Eastern Command.

The use case is brutally practical: every winter, snowfall cuts off roads to remote military posts across the Himalayas, making it hard to move rations, medicines, fuel and engineering supplies, while helicopters are costly and often grounded by weather. Heavy-lift logistics drones are built to fill exactly that gap — last-mile delivery where ground transport cannot reach and conventional drones cannot sustain the load.

For deeptech founders, BonV Aero is a case study in earning trust through demonstrated performance in extreme conditions, one validated trial at a time.

Why it matters for founders

Deeptech credibility is earned in the field, not in a pitch deck. BonV Aero's high-altitude trials show founders that a validated, repeatable demonstration — with a real customer watching — is worth more than any funding announcement.
