Boldstart Ventures calls itself "The Inception Fund" — and it means it literally. The New York firm writes first cheques for technical founders before the product, pitch deck or even the company exists. Founded in 2010 by Ed Sim as a $1M proof-of-concept, Boldstart has grown into an enterprise-seed institution managing more than $1.1B. Its stated ambition is to back the operating system of the autonomous enterprise — investing, as it puts it, from the very first commit.

The fund progression charts the journey: Fund II at $17M (2013), Fund III at $47M (2016), Fund IV — $112M plus a $45M Opportunity I fund — in November 2019, Fund V — $155M plus $75M Opportunity II — in February 2021, a $175M Opportunities III vehicle, and Fund VII: $250M closed in July 2025, oversubscribed but deliberately held at $250M. The firm has backed more than 130 founding teams since 2010, with first cheques from $500K to $15M.

The thesis is the autonomous enterprise: AI-native infrastructure, cybersecurity, physical AI, developer-first software, autonomous agents, secure identity and enterprise SaaS. Roughly 75% of deal flow comes from founder referrals — Sim's team talks to technical founders before they have started companies.

Boldstart runs a "leveraged model" instead of a big team: an advisory and early-adopter network of Fortune 500 CTOs and exited founders — alumni of Datadog, Figma, Slack, Auth0 and Chainalysis — who help portfolio companies find product-market fit. Founder-facing initiatives include the Inception programme and bold.camp, a 0-to-1 camp for developer-first founders first held on the West Coast in 2022.

The wins are era-defining for enterprise seed. Boldstart backed Snyk at inception — last valued at $7.4B — backing founder Guy Podjarny at formation. It wrote early cheques into Kustomer, sold to Meta for a reported $1B, and backed BigID at inception before its $1B valuation round in December 2020. Superhuman was acquired by Grammarly; Protect AI went to Palo Alto Networks for more than $700M; and newer names include Clay ($3.1B), Spectro Cloud ($750M), Front and SecurityScorecard.

Why it matters for founders

If you are a technical founder with conviction but no company yet, Boldstart is one of the few firms designed exactly for you: inception cheques, an operator network that opens enterprise doors, and a track record of backing iconic dev-tools companies from their first commit.
