Blume Ventures, founded in 2010 by Karthik Reddy and Sanjay Nath, is widely regarded as India's first institutionalised early-stage investor. At a time when startup funding meant either angels or giant VCs, Blume invented the middle: the micro-VC model — many bets, high-touch support, institutional rigour.

The origin story: Reddy (ex-Times Group's Brand Capital, IIT Roorkee/IIM Bangalore/Wharton) and Nath (ex-Mumbai Angels, BITS Pilani/UCLA Anderson) met through the Mumbai Angels Network and spotted a structural gap — nobody between angels and $100M+ funds. Blume launched its first fund in 2011 at just $20 million, raised entirely from domestic HNIs, targeting 25–30 investments a year. As Forbes India chronicled, the gameplan was simple: don't lose too much on any mistake, be relentlessly helpful to entrepreneurs, and build an institution of repute.

Funds & performance: Fund I ($20M) → Fund II ($60M) → Fund III ($102M, closed 2020 — the first $100M+ fund by a homegrown VC), plus a $41M Opportunity Fund and a Fund IV. Fund I reportedly returned around 5x invested capital — elite performance that cemented Blume's reputation with global LPs.

Thesis & stages: Seed through scale-up, with a sweet spot in pre-Series A and Series A. Sector-agnostic but tech-led: consumer, enterprise and deep tech. Blume looks for mission-oriented founders building businesses with no global equivalent — not copycats.

Notable portfolio: TaxiForSure (acquired by Ola), Zipdial (acquired by Twitter), Unacademy, Dunzo, GreyOrange, Instamojo, HealthifyMe, Cashify, Yulu, Locus, Exotel, Mettl, Carbon Clean, Flash.co — 150+ companies across India and the US.

Founder support: True to its micro-VC roots, Blume built a platform of services — finance, hiring, legal, HR — to push portfolio companies to their next stage faster. Reddy is known as the direct, cut-and-dried decision-maker; Nath as the consensus-building enabler.

Fund size: Individual fund vintages publicly reported (Funds I–III as above); current AUM not publicly disclosed on the firm's site.

Why it matters for founders

Raising your first institutional round? Blume practically invented that market in India. They back mission-driven founders at pre-Series A with real operating help — but come with a tech edge and a genuinely original idea, because "another me-too app" won't clear their bar.
