Bluehill.VC is a Chennai-based frontier-tech venture firm founded in 2024 by Manu Iyer and Sridhar Parthasarathy. On 13 August 2026 it announced the final close of its maiden fund at ₹400 crore (about $42 million) — a ₹350 crore target plus the full ₹50 crore greenshoe. Iyer deliberately rejects the “deep tech” label: Bluehill calls itself a frontier-tech fund and defines it narrowly as foundational IP in engineering or science, benchmarked globally rather than against the Indian status quo.

Thesis

Bluehill follows an invest-and-build philosophy: first institutional cheque, deep operational engagement, and long-horizon patience for founders doing genuinely hard science and engineering. The firm writes cheques of $1–2 million into 15–16 early-stage companies, entering around technology-readiness levels 3–4 with first-cheque and follow-on firepower. Its investing team is staffed entirely by engineers, and it relies on technical advisors — including Ashok Jhunjhunwala of the IIT Madras Research Park and Pentium architect Vinod Dham — to separate genuine inventors from assemblers and re-labellers.

Sectors and stages

Seed to Series A across defence & aerospace, space, energy, semiconductors, manufacturing/IoT/robotics, advanced materials, water & agriculture and biotech.

Notable portfolio

At close it had already deployed roughly ₹100 crore across seven startups, including EtherealX (fully reusable launch vehicle; ~$3 million into a $20 million round), Helex (therapeutics for genetic kidney disease), Sophrosyne Technologies ($2 million seed for wearable health devices), Makr Microsystems (₹10.2 crore seed led by Bluehill in September 2026 for semiconductor metrology), Zebu Intelligent Systems (counter-drone) and fabless semiconductor startup optoML.

Partners and team

Manu Iyer (Managing Partner and co-founder), an IIT Madras BTech graduate specialising in electric-vehicle and semiconductor technology, delivered a stated 38% IRR on seven years of deeptech investing before the fund. Sridhar Parthasarathy (Managing Partner and co-founder) cites a 35% IRR on his prior four-year record. The external investment committee includes BigBasket co-founder and COO Vipul Parekh and LIC audit-committee chair MP Vijaykumar. Institutional backers include SIDBI and the governments of Kerala and Uttar Pradesh, alongside family offices and ultra-high-net-worth individuals from India and the Middle East.

Programs

Bluehill, as a SEBI-registered AIF under the UP Startup Fund of Funds managed by SIDBI, has run a Deep Tech Hunt with Start in UP to surface deeptech startups across AI, robotics, semiconductors, spacetech, climate tech and advanced materials — pairing visibility and mentorship with potential investment support.

Why it matters for founders

Frontier-tech founders in India have historically been starved of patient early capital — Bluehill’s ₹400 crore vehicle, backed by SIDBI and two state governments, is designed exactly for that gap. If you are building foundational IP rather than a faster copy, this is a fund whose engineers will actually understand what you are building.
