The thesis

Bloomberg Beta is an early-stage venture capital firm launched in June 2013 and capitalised solely by Bloomberg L.P. Its stated purpose is to expand Bloomberg's horizons by investing in companies built by extraordinary founders that make business work better. The firm runs its fund in deliberately unorthodox ways to build trust with founders: anyone on the team can independently say yes to a deal, and instead of a conventional website it open-sourced its entire operating manual on GitHub. It even measures its own success by founders' customer-service ratings of the firm.

Sectors and stages

The firm invests at the earliest stages with a focus on machine intelligence and the future of work — the technologies changing how business operates. It was recognised by CB Insights as the number two investor in AI. Its bets span data, content discovery, media distribution, human-computer interaction, cybersecurity, edtech, insurtech and healthcare. The firm also uses data itself to find customers, running a Future Founders project since 2014 that attempts to predict who will start companies before they do.

Fund size

Bloomberg Beta manages $450 million, raised as four successive $75 million funds — launched in 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022 — plus a first $75 million opportunity fund announced in June 2022. Bloomberg L.P. remains the sole investor in the fund, which operates as a separate entity. The firm is headquartered in San Francisco with operations in New York City.

Notable portfolio

The firm does not publish a full portfolio list on its minimal public site, but its investing footprint is concentrated in AI and future-of-work startups. Its public reputation rests less on named exits and more on its model: a corporate-backed fund that behaves like an independent seed firm, investing to make money while publishing everything about how it works.

Partners

The firm is led by Roy Bahat, with Karin Klein as founding partner and James Cham as partner. The investing partnership is noted for an equal female-to-male ratio — unusual in venture. Operating support comes from staff including Angela Martin as operating partner and head of operations and communications.

Programs run

Bloomberg Beta runs several founder- and ecosystem-facing programmes. The Future Founders project uses data to identify future entrepreneurs. Since 2014 it has published an annual Machine Intelligence landscape mapping the AI startup ecosystem. And it organises Comeback Cities, bus tours taking venture capitalists and members of Congress through American cities to find untapped entrepreneurial talent beyond the coastal hubs.

Credits and perks

No formal founder credits or perks platform is publicly documented. The firm's founder value proposition is transparency and speed: an open-sourced operating manual, a public guide to how decisions get made, and a deal process in which any team member can say yes — cutting the usual partnership politics out of early-stage fundraising.

Why it matters for founders

Bloomberg Beta is the rare corporate venture fund that founders actively seek out. If you are building AI or future-of-work software, it offers seed capital from a sole LP with deep pockets, a decision process that can move on a single yes, and radical transparency about how the fund works. Read the open-sourced operating manual before you pitch — it is effectively a cheat sheet for the meeting.
