Investor Profile: Berkeley SkyDeck

Berkeley SkyDeck is the official startup accelerator of the University of California, Berkeley. Founded in 2012 as a joint venture between the Haas School of Business and the College of Engineering, and it ranks among the top university accelerators in the US and worldwide.

SkyDeck puts that advantage behind its founders in concrete form. Startups gain access to Berkeley's labs, faculty and student talent pool, a network of 500,000 Berkeley alumni, and 900 advisors and mentors who coach founders on product, customer acquisition, go-to-market and fundraising. Programming follows the Berkeley Acceleration Method (BAM), a series of curated workshops on the full arc of launching and scaling. SkyDeck also maintains relationships with hundreds of enterprises as early adopters, and brokers introductions to executives across the alumni network.

SkyDeck hosts over 250 startups a year across three programmes. The flagship SkyDeck Accelerator (Cohort) selects roughly 20 startups every six months for a six-month cycle; each receives a $200,000 investment from the Berkeley SkyDeck Fund, a dedicated lead advisor, workspace, working sessions and a Demo Day before more than 1,000 attendees. Pad-13, the SkyDeck Incubator, takes earlier-stage startups — even idea-stage teams of one or two founders — to prepare them for the accelerator (Pad-13 requires at least one UC-affiliated founder). The Innovation Partners Program (IPP) lets partner organisations send startups to SkyDeck for a three-month acceleration, from various industries and funding stages.

The Berkeley SkyDeck Fund, run by Managing Partner Chon Tang and Partner Brian Bordley, is one of the most active seed investors in the Bay Area. The original fund raised an oversubscribed $24 million in 2018 with backing from Sequoia Capital, Mayfield and Sierra Ventures; Fund II raised an oversubscribed $60 million in 2022. In a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership, the Fund shares half of its profits with UC Berkeley, supporting the university's education mission. Cohort teams also receive $750,000 in free and discounted resources — typically including cloud credits, legal support and other startup perks.

The track record: SkyDeck's portfolio companies ("SkyTeams") have raised $2.7 billion in aggregate, with 25 Series A and B rounds and 17 exits through acquisition. The Fund has backed 160 companies from 30 countries, with alumni including Lime, the micromobility unicorn, and Kiwi Campus, the autonomous food-delivery robotics company. Admission is fiercely competitive, at around a 1% acceptance rate.

While SkyDeck accepts startups from all industries, it runs four specialised tracks for deeply technical founders — including aerospace, semiconductors and biotech, the latter linked to Berkeley's Bakar BioEnginuity Hub — and in 2026 expanded AI support through the Mayfield AI Garage alongside the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society.

For Indian and international founders, the door is genuinely open: past cohorts have included teams from Brazil, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Switzerland and Bulgaria. A Berkeley degree is not a prerequisite, but the bar is extremely high — roughly one in a hundred applicants is accepted — so SkyDeck suits deeply technical, venture-scale startups ready for a high-intensity six-month programme.

Why it matters for founders

Berkeley SkyDeck pairs a real $200,000 investment with the resources of a top research university — labs, faculty, 900 mentors and a half-million-strong alumni network — plus up to $750,000 in credits and perks. If you are building a deeply technical, venture-scale startup and can clear one of the toughest bars in the accelerator world (~1% acceptance), the combination of capital, credibility and Berkeley's global reach is unmatched among university accelerators.
