Beenext is a Singapore-based venture capital firm founded in 2015 by Teruhide Sato, the founder of Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed Japanese e-commerce and investment company Beenos. Investing in India since inception, it describes its footprint as 180 companies across 17 countries and 5 continents, with India its largest geography — the firm has backed 72 Indian startups to date.
Investment thesis
Beenext's stated philosophy is "building businesses together with founders and fellow local co-investors to have a lasting impact". It calls itself industry-agnostic, subscribing to what it terms "limitless" thinking — not constraining itself by region, sector or round — and prides itself on a global founder community built on openness, free-flow ideation and transparency. The firm believes in co-creating with founders and local co-investors, and its site leans heavily on founder stories: its NoBroker investment, for instance, followed the founding team's office being vandalised by a mob of real-estate brokers — taken by the firm as a signal that the idea was disruptive enough to matter.
Sectors, stages and cheque sizes
Beenext focuses on early-stage startups and founders. Its Beenext Emerging Asia Fund, a $110M vehicle closed in 2020, targets Indian and Southeast Asian startups in e-commerce, fintech, health-tech, agri-tech, edtech and AI/data-driven technology — with roughly 50% of the corpus earmarked for India, its fourth consecutive India-focused fund. A second $50M fund closed alongside it is dedicated exclusively to SaaS businesses in Japan. Backers across these funds include US institutional investors, Japanese corporations, global family offices and entrepreneurs. Typical cheque sizes are not publicly disclosed.
Notable portfolio
Its Indian portfolio includes fintech major BharatPe, neobank Bank Open (Open), payments platform Instamojo, property portal NoBroker, auto marketplace Droom, digital gaming company Mobile Premier League, device-lifecycle platform Servify, video-blogging platform Trell, fleet-analytics startup FleetX, agritech company CropIn, workforce platform WorkIndia, diagnostics player Healthians, micro-delivery startup MilkBasket and CitrusPay, alongside climate-data startup Bluesky Analytics.
Partners and team
Teruhide Sato is the firm's founder and managing partner. He was joined at inception by partner Hiro Maeda, a long-time Beenos and Open Network Lab collaborator. Hero Choudhary serves as an investment partner — the firm's first new incoming investment partner since 2015 — and leads much of the India-facing investing, with an India investment team supporting the region.
Programmes and accelerators
Beenext does not publicly run an accelerator or a formal structured programme. Its community model — founder stories, cross-border learning and a shared LP-founder network — functions as its platform for portfolio support.
Credits and perks
No credits, perks or startup-support packages are publicly documented.
Why it matters for founders
For Indian founders, Beenext offers a rare bridge between Japan and India: a Singapore-based fund whose founder built a listed Japanese tech company, with deep LP ties to Japanese corporates and a 180-company global founder community. It is worth a conversation for early-stage teams in fintech, commerce and AI-driven sectors that want Asian expansion routes beyond the usual India-US corridor.
