Startup funding in India is going regional: Banaraswala, a food brand specialising in traditional Banarasi cuisine, has raised $2 million in seed funding from Prax Impex Private Limited. The round was reported on October 15, 2026.

Founded by Vibhanshu Mishra, Banaraswala focuses on regional Banarasi food — traditional sweets, chaats and meals — under the tagline "Ghat Se Ghar Tak". The brand weaves local food culture into its dining format through kulhads, pattal and clay-based serving accessories, and also sells through major online food delivery platforms.

From 3 outlets to 50: the startup funding India regional play

Banaraswala currently operates three outlets across Delhi and is preparing to enter new markets — Banswara in Rajasthan, Sarangpur in Gujarat, and Farrukhabad and Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh. The company has set a target of 50 outlets by March 2027 across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and other Tier II markets, through a mix of company-operated stores and franchise outlets.

The fresh capital will fund new locations, menu development and franchise-network expansion, alongside stronger internal operations, team building and business processes to manage a larger retail network. The brand's thesis: regional cuisines, packaged in organised outlet formats and franchising, can travel far beyond their home markets.

Why it matters for founders

Banaraswala's ambition — 3 to 50 outlets in under 18 months on $2M — is the asset-light franchise playbook at its most aggressive. For food founders, the insight is that 'regional' is no longer a limitation but a brand moat: authenticity sells, and franchising lets you scale it without burning your own capex.
