AWS Activate is Amazon Web Services' flagship startup program — and by sheer scale, one of the most significant startup support initiatives in technology. Since 2013, AWS reports providing $7 billion in promotional credits globally through Activate, supporting hundreds of thousands of startups from inception through scale. For founders building on AWS, understanding Activate's tiers is essential to maximising non-dilutive cloud funding.
The program operates in clearly defined tiers. Activate Founders is designed for self-funded startups — founders who have not raised institutional capital. It offers $1,000 in AWS credits to start, with select participants qualifying for up to $5,000 over time as they hit usage and engagement milestones. Eligibility requires being new to Activate credits, self-funded, with a fully functioning company website, and founded within the past 10 years. This tier is deliberately accessible: no VC backing required, no accelerator membership needed.
Activate Portfolio is the heavyweight tier, offering up to $200,000 in AWS credits. This tier is for provider-backed startups — companies associated with an Activate Provider (an accelerator, angel investor, or VC firm) who share their Organisation ID. Eligibility requires never having received equal or greater Activate credits, being pre-Series B (with the most recent round, if any, within the last 12 months), having a functioning website, and founding within the last 10 years. The $200K can cover substantial infrastructure costs through product-market fit and beyond.
For AI startups, there is an additional invite-only tier offering $200,000+ in credits, accessed via an AWS Account Manager after the Portfolio tier. This reflects AWS's strategic push to capture AI workloads, and AI founders should proactively ask their account team about eligibility.
General eligibility across tiers: pre-Series B startups, founded in the last 10 years, with an AWS account on the paid tier. The Founders tier allows direct application; the Portfolio tier requires the provider's Organisation ID — so founders should ask their accelerator or VC for it.
For Indian founders specifically, the Provider network includes major domestic accelerators. T-Hub (Hyderabad) and NSRCEL (IIM Bangalore) act as Activate Providers — their Organisation IDs unlock the six-figure Portfolio tier for startups in their networks. If you are part of these or similar programs, claiming the $200K tier is straightforward.
Beyond credits, Activate provides technical support, training resources, and go-to-market support including AWS Marketplace listing assistance and co-marketing opportunities.
Why it matters for founders
If you are building on AWS, Activate can cover $1,000 to $200,000 in cloud costs — entirely non-dilutive and relatively straightforward to claim. Self-funded founders should start with the Founders tier ($1K–$5K). If you are in an accelerator like T-Hub or NSRCEL, ask for their Activate Provider Org ID to access the $200K Portfolio tier. AI startups should additionally inquire about the invite-only $200K+ tier. Do not leave this money on the table.
