Investment thesis
AWE Funds — short for Achieving Women Equity — is a SEBI-registered, women-led venture capital firm based in Gurgaon, India, founded in 2019 by Seema Chaturvedi. Its thesis sits at the intersection of climate action and gender equity: investing in tech-led innovation that promotes gender-equitable climate action. AWE applies a quantitative, threshold-based gender lens, backing women-owned, women-led or women-influenced companies — including businesses where women dominate the supply chain or customer base — with a goal of empowering 30 million women to gain economic agency by 2030.
Sectors and stage focus
AWE invests at the early growth stage — typically pre-Series A and Series A equity rounds — writing cheques of $500,000 to $3 million. Its sector focus spans climate tech (energy, water, mobility, industrial decarbonisation and sustainable agriculture), healthtech, fintech and the future of work, with climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience as the core lens.
Fund size
AWE announced a $15 million first close of its maiden India fund in the summer of 2023, backed mostly by Indian high net-worth individuals, with a stated target of $45 million plus a $15 million green-shoe option. A 2026 report put the firm's fundraising aim for the fund at $65 million. The Autodesk Foundation was the first institution to back AWE, and the Bayer Foundation became its second big-name philanthropic backer.
Notable portfolio
Since its first close, AWE has built a portfolio of six ventures. Its latest disclosed investment is Ikin, a Kochi-based startup making smart locks for freight cargo, in which AWE participated in a $2 million pre-Series A round in June 2026, framing the deal as a plastic-reduction play. Other holdings include KB Cols Sciences, Monitra Health, Uravu Labs, EyeROV and Digital EcoInnovision, plus three warehoused investments; earlier backers include FreshoKartz Agri, Remedico, Velmeni and AGAM International.
Partners
The firm was founded by Seema Chaturvedi, founder and managing partner, with over 25 years of capital markets experience. She also founded and chairs TiE Global's AIRSWEEE programme for women's entrepreneurship, which mentored 575 women across Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities with US State Department backing.
Programmes and founder perks
AWE runs the AWE Fellowship Program (AFP), described as India's first programme offering specialised training for aspiring investors — especially women — in private equity and venture capital. Led by AWE Funds in partnership with the AWE Foundation, the fellowship blends lectures, case studies and workshops with real investment exposure across deal sourcing, due diligence, portfolio management and investor relations. Select fellows may receive full-time analyst offers with host organisations.
Why it matters for founders
AWE Funds is one of the few Indian VCs explicitly built around women-led climate tech, and its cheques of $500,000 to $3 million hit the pre-Series A and Series A gap where many climate startups stall. Women founders in energy, water, mobility or healthtech should have AWE on their target list — the gender-lens mandate means a warmer reception than at generalist funds. The AWE Fellowship is also a notable on-ramp for women who want to enter investing itself rather than raise from it.
