Accounting-tech startup Atlas has secured $6 million (₹55 crore) in a seed funding round co-led by Accel and Stellaris Venture Partners, VCCircle reported this week. The raise puts a spotlight on one of the least glamorous — and most lucrative — frontiers of applied AI: the back offices of professional services firms.

Founded in 2025 by Arpit Maheshwari, a former Stellaris executive who now serves as CEO, and Jagmal Singh, an entrepreneur who previously founded Connecto (later acquired by CarDekho), Atlas is building an AI platform that lets independent accounting firms compete at a scale previously out of their reach. The capital will go towards expanding the AI platform, growing its network of partner accounting firms in North America, and accelerating go-to-market efforts.

"Atlas is building infrastructure that will allow the best independent firms to compete at a scale that was previously out of their reach," Maheshwari said. "We are also putting skin in the game with our partners, aligning our incentives directly to their success. This funding allows us to deepen our platform, grow our network, and move with the urgency this moment demands."

The thesis is elegantly simple: thousands of independent accounting firms sit on deep client trust but lack the technology muscle of the Big Four. An AI layer that standardises workflows, automates compliance drudgery and scales expertise could turn fragmentation into a feature. With two tier-one firms co-leading the seed round — one of them the CEO's former employer — Atlas starts with both capital and conviction behind it.

Why it matters for founders

The hottest AI bets of 2026 aren't chatbots — they're vertical infrastructure plays in unsexy industries where domain expertise is the moat. If you're building in India for global professional services, note the Atlas playbook: an operator-founder, an aligned incentive model with channel partners, and investors who understand the vertical. Boring markets, venture-scale outcomes.
