Altara Ventures calls itself a high-conviction venture capital firm — and its partnership reads like a roll call of Southeast Asian tech veterans. The Singapore-based firm backs early-stage technology companies across Southeast Asia and beyond, leading rounds at pre-A, Series A and Series B.

The firm was launched by five general partners: Koh Boon Hwee, Tan Chow Boon, Seow Kiat Wang, Gavin Teo and Dave Ng. Koh, Tan and Seow are Singaporean entrepreneurs and angel investors with more than 100 angel investments between them — including Razer and StashAway — who previously held senior roles at Hewlett Packard before founding Omni Industries, which was acquired by Celestica for SGD 1.6 billion. Teo and Ng previously led investments at B Capital Group. As investors, the partners have backed companies including Appier, Atomwise, Carro, Cialfo, Cred, Icertis, Ninja Van and Twitch, several of which have listed publicly or reached unicorn status.

Altara's inaugural fund closed at approximately US$130 million in February 2022, backed by anchor investors including leading institutional funds, sovereign wealth funds, financial services institutions, publicly listed corporations and prominent family offices. The firm's stated ambition is to be the pre-eminent capital partner for early-stage tech entrepreneurs in the region.

Its focus sectors span fintech, logistics and mobility, consumer, enterprise software and deep tech, healthcare and edtech — and the firm's own site notes a team spanning 9+ geographies invested in, 6+ core sectors and 4+ country offices. Verified portfolio companies include Tonik (the Philippines' leading digital bank), Stashfin (Indian fintech neobank), Indonesia's Sampingan (digital staffing for the gig economy), Vietnam's Clevai (K-12 edtech), Malaysia's PolicyStreet (digital insurtech), FreeAgent CRM (enterprise SaaS), Netbank, Buy&Ship and Klinik Pintar.

Altara positions itself as built by operators: the partners emphasise systems-level thinking and first-hand experience across Southeast Asia, South Korea, the US and beyond, bringing global perspective and cross-border networks — including links into the Chinese tech ecosystem — to the founders they back.

No public accelerator programme or startup credits scheme was found; the firm's founder support centres on high-conviction, lead-investor partnerships and operator-led company building.

Why it matters for founders

If you are building an early-stage fintech, consumer or enterprise-tech company in Southeast Asia, Altara offers rare operator depth: partners who have founded, scaled and exited companies themselves. They lead rounds and bring genuine cross-border networks — pitch them if you want a capital partner, not just a cheque.
