Startup funding in India is increasingly flowing through state-backed AI infrastructure: AKTU Innovation Hub has secured an AI Centre of Excellence for Lucknow under the IndiaAI Mission — a ₹20 crore project running over four years, granted by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, StartupFeed reported on October 17, 2026.

What the centre gives founders

The centre sits with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University in Lucknow. Like other state centres, it will run cohorts, lab access and subsidised compute — not grants alone. Kerala's equivalent centre, launched on September 30, 2026 under Digital University Kerala, opened with a first cohort of 15 startups across healthcare, climate, e-governance and agriculture, with needs-based, subsidised compute. The IndiaAI Mission itself runs on ₹10,372 crore with a common compute pool of 18,693 GPUs.

Where UP stands

States are moving at different speeds: Kerala has launched, Odisha has in-principle approval, and Delhi announced two centres in April 2026. Lucknow already has an AI Centre of Excellence at IIIT Lucknow backing 15+ AI and ML startups, plus the planned 70-acre AI City at Nadarganj. AKTU affiliates hundreds of engineering colleges across Uttar Pradesh, giving the new centre statewide reach.

No application window is open yet — Innovation Hub Uttar Pradesh has announced the approval, not a cohort call. The four-year horizon is the real signal: it buys staff, labs and repeat cohorts rather than a ribbon cutting.

Why it matters for founders

For UP AI founders, this is a pipeline to watch, not a press release: subsidised compute and a cohort seat will likely flow through AKTU-affiliated incubators and Startin UP lists first.
