AI startups raised $438 million across 35 deals in Q3 2026 — up 265% year-on-year and the first time AI has led India's quarterly funding charts, according to Inc42's Indian Tech Startup Funding Report Q3 2026, released on 9 October 2026. Deal count rose 35% to 35 from 26 in Q3 2025, with Emergent's $130 million round the quarter's largest startup raise.

The quarter caps a breakthrough year for Indian AI funding: startups raised $676 million across 57 deals in H1 2026, over four times the $162 million of H1 2025, taking the nine-month tally past $1.1 billion. Yet the broader ecosystem stayed subdued — total startup funding was $2.2 billion across 210 deals, up just 5% YoY with deal count down 13%, well below the eight-quarter average of ~$2.7 billion.

AI wasn't the only breakout. Cleantech startups raised $433 million, up 267% YoY, and advanced hardware (robotics, semiconductors, aerial vehicles) jumped 176% to $290 million on a flat 28 deals. Meanwhile fintech fell 11% to $249 million and ecommerce dropped 31% to $245 million.

A caution flag accompanies the numbers: Inc42's investor survey found 63% of institutional investors see some froth in Indian AI valuations, with about half expecting a correction within 18 months. Investors favour vertical AI applications in BFSI, healthcare, defence and agriculture (39%) over foundation models — distribution, not models, is the moat in India.

Why it matters for founders

Capital is concentrating in fewer, larger bets on proven themes — AI applications, cleantech and hardware. If you're raising now, lead with revenue and distribution economics; 63% of investors are watching for AI valuation froth, and narrative alone won't clear diligence.
