Afore Capital is the rare venture firm built around a single stage: pre-seed, exclusively. Based in San Francisco and founded in 2016 by Gaurav Jain and Anamitra Banerji, Afore describes itself as a $500 million fund writing $500k–$2M+ cheques with high conviction into pre-traction, "pre-everything" companies. Its pitch to founders is blunt: it invests before traction, before revenue, and sometimes before incorporation.
The thesis is product-obsessed. Both co-founders come from product backgrounds — Jain was a founding product manager on Android and later a principal at Founder Collective, while Banerji spent years at Twitter — and the firm hunts for product-centric, technical founders at the earliest possible moment. Its sweet spot is the roughly $1 million pre-seed round, which it aims to lead as the institutional investor alongside high-value angels. Afore has raised successive dedicated pre-seed funds: a $77 million second fund, a $150 million third fund in 2022, and a $185 million fourth fund in 2025.
The portfolio spans more than 200 companies, including Modern Health, BenchSci, Hightouch — which raised an $80 million round at a $1.2 billion valuation — Neo Financial, Gamma, New Lantern, Petal, BetterUp and Winnie.
Beyond cheques, Afore runs two founder-facing programmes. Afore Alpha is its rolling pre-seed investment programme: any company, in any industry, anywhere in the world, can apply without a referral, and the firm expects to invest in 10–15 companies a year through it, dedicating its team and go-to-market resources to each company's push toward an outsized Series A. Applications can also be shared — in a curated way — with Afore's network of pre-seed angels and funds. Its Founders-in-Residence (FIR) programme is an eight-week ideation programme run in its San Francisco office, in two to three cohorts a year of five to eight teams each, writing cheques of a few hundred thousand dollars into people just starting out. Afore stresses it is the opposite of an accelerator: the goal is inventing a product alongside founders, not demo-day fundraising.
The investment team includes co-founders and managing partners Gaurav Jain and Anamitra Banerji, VP of Finance Jared Luttrell, and investors Kayla Kavanaugh, Nathan Yu, Laura Du and Joe Cardini. The firm does not publicly advertise cloud-credit or perk bundles.
Why it matters for founders
For founders at the idea stage, Afore is one of the most founder-friendly institutional doors in the US: no traction needed, no referral needed, and a team of former product builders who will roll up their sleeves. Apply to Afore Alpha if you want a lead pre-seed cheque; apply to Founders-in-Residence if you are still searching for the idea itself.
